Tolkien, as reported by Lewis, was reiterating a trope well developed among the Traditionalist ideologues of his time. Attend to Tolkien’s fellow ecological reactionary Rolf Gardiner. Gardiner tells the tale of one of his farm employees who suffered from depression and who explained his malady thus:I was brought up on Empire foods: part of me is Australian, part of me Canadian, part of me South African; whereas my old grandfather, who was a carpenter in Kent, was brought up on local wholemeal bread, and local beer and bacon, and belonged wholly to the place where he was born and bred and lived his working days. (Gardiner 1972, 183)
